may 2007

i haven't posted a blog in a long ass time. gee whiz, since march i guess. what's happening in my world today?
my sled is out of commission. i think i blew a piston about two weeks ago. i took coltrane out for a ride on the ocean ice, when all of a sudden my rig quit on me. i tried starting it, but even the pull was different. finally got it started and it sounded sick, as in not good. blown piston, or something. i'll wait til fall time to get it fixed. its parked for the season right now.

coltrane is here! its great to finally be with my son for more than a day or weekend. he flew out may 5th, and is scheduled to go back to ankritz tomorrow. three weeks has gone by so fast. he's gone out ice fishing, seal hunting, and out with me on the f7. he likes the sno-go! my boy! i also gave him a mullet! i think i'll have him take it with him to ankritz. he can rock a mullet for a bit.

work is going okay. i'm getting used to grant writing. the only negative thing about my job is that i'm stuck in this little ass cubicle almost all day, all the while the sun is shining and its nice out. i submitted my first major grant on may 7th for 740K over five years. not too bad for my first ever grants job.

i caught my first seal of the season on tuesday! i took off with willie's sled out past sisaulik where the seal are more 'tame.' when coltrane and i went toward cape blossum for seal, they were wild, sliding into their holes early. this one i shot was taken with my hornet. love that gun! it was a mama seal. the baby slid into the hole first, but this one hung around and waited for me to shoot it. i skinned it out, butchered it, and packed it away onto the cargo rack on the sno-go. the only thing that bothered me was the fact that i left the skin and blubber out there on the ice. it was too heavy to take back and i didn't have a sled. i was thinking about taking some of the fat with me, but it was already getting a little late. oh well, i gave back to the land. when i butchered the seal, i took its skull and said a little prayer to it before throwing it down the hole. i made my peace with her.

the ocean ice out front is starting to really rot and fill up with water. its very slushy and getting dangerous. soon, the ice will be out and we'll be hunting by boat. i'm excited. i need to zero-in my .243 and .223. the hornet is close enough. i'll be taking the .243 and .223 out for bearded seal. can't wait. i'll be sure to post pics up later. peace out. God bless.
