i'm sitting here at ykhc in bethel, waiting for my cousin danielle to put the finishing touches on an obituary for my nephew 'big boy.' zaret levon chase was killed in a snowmobile/car accident on jan. 28, 2007. he was on his way home from his girlfriend's house when an oncoming vehicle turned into a parking lot. big boy had no choice but to hit the truck at the last second. he stopped breathing and died from his injuries on the scene. big boy was 18 years old.
i'm saddened by this whole thing because my family and this world lost such a bright, young, lover of life. that's what big boy was. he was a gentle soul, and he was passionate about life. he was a good boy. how can one be taken so soon? he was only 18. he was innocent. big boy, you will not be forgotten. zaret levon chase. feb. 22, 1988-jan. 28, 2007.
rants. raves. these are confessions of a madman. take action today. the sands of time wait for no one.

ipod while you work
i just figured something out here at my workstation. i can listen to my ipod through my computer speakers! its great, john mayer, jay-z, and johnny cash in my little cubicle.
how to do it: we've got dell computers: unplug the main speaker cord that connects to your tower. plug it into your ipod. crank that bugger up, way up, and rock out! i am sure you will notice a marked increase in your work productivity.

winter sealing
i went out yesterday for seal for the first time on snowmachine here in kotzebue. went out with local nukalpiaq ross schaeffer. we headed out toward the lead, but windy conditions made us turn back. i was pretty excited to go out. ross towed his kayak on a sled.
as we were heading out onto the ocean ice, i thought of how much this type of sealing was what i read about in story books. seriously. i was pretty excited to do it. i was even more excited to see the open lead, open ocean and look for seal. unfortunately, that didn't happen this trip. ross stopped, scoped out the ice and wind conditions and said we better turn back. it was blowing about 15 from the east. a west wind is a much better wind, which blows away from the ice toward the ocean.
i took my hornet out. ross shoots a .222. as we waited there observing the weather, we talked briefly about guns, hunting, and stories of his father who was apparently a great hunter. it was great. i can learn alot from ross. i will pray for good weather this weekend.

"i don't give a rat's ass...."
i just learned today that my bro andrei was featured in the anchorage daily news a few days ago. the guy didn't even tell me! anyways, the article was about mixed races, native and non-native blood.
the best thing about the article was dre's comment, "i don't give a rat's ass about being in ancsa." fuckin classic, man.
read the article:

good job dre. next time, give me a head's up on your brushes with celebrity.

yup'ik word of the day--saskaq
saskaq: (SUSS-guq): (n): cup
Sindy, hand me that saskaq please. The one with the tuntu on it. No, the other one.
NOTES:
Cup'ik people spell 'saskaq' differently; its 'caskaq' in Cup'ik (JUSS-guq)--their dialect has more of a Russian influence.
If you change the 'k' to an 's,' you get 'sass'aq' which means 'clock.' Keep the 'k' and keep the cup. saskaq

fastest yup'ik girl!
look out world, here comes callan! two and a half years ago, i met gloria chythlook at the heritage center in ankritz. it was then that she told me about her daughter callan and her path to becoming a great snowboarder. callan's well on her way.
callan chythlook-sifsof is the fastest yup'ik girl on the planet. she's a 17 year-old snowboarding sensation who just recently was named to the u.s. snowboarding team. the fearless boarder was born in aleknagik, in bristol bay. read more about the fastest yup'ik girl in today's adn.com. http://www.adn.com/outdoors/winter_recreation/story/8544213p-8437969c.html

much respek, callan! tear it up!

celebrate life, boyaq-style
here are some random things that i like:
hunting: togiak has the best seal hunting i've seen. the blue ocean and high rocky cliffs make for a very scenic hunting experience; whittier is one of the best! sea otter are everywhere! seal pop up once in awhile too. if you go up cochrane and blackstone bay far enough, you'll reach the glaciers; nunap has probably the best fly-by duck shooting i know. the yukon-kuskokwim delta is a duck hunters dream- every imaginable water source/way. decoy hunting in nunap is fun.
reading: gq is a great airport purchase; discover magazine- science is very interesting- there's no room for argument in science; cargo magazine has it all- techno gadgets, style pointers, all the new shit; anchorage daily news.
threads: white tees- a must for every guy. i use one every single day. jockey is my preference; carhartts- good hunting and camping gear and all-around bush-living wear. just don't get them wet.
beverages: heineken for beer. stoli for booze. red rose for tea. water or tea for hunting trips.
shoes: i have all kinds. my latest acquisition was a pair of the new duuuuwayne waaaades. basketball, baby; brown leather boots are a must, chukka-style- you can wear them up or down, to the gaslight or to the boardroom; running shoes- though i'm not a runner, i like the comfort of sporty-ass, lightweight kickers; bunny boots are a 8-month-out-of-the-year pair. i believe in the saying 'shoes make the man.'
internet sites: here are some regulars that i check- accuratereloading.com, 24hourcampfire.com, miisaaq1.blogspot.com, humpingisimportant.blogspot.com, adn.com, anchorage.craigslist.com, cnn.com no porn for me-too dirty- keep it clean, baby!
glasses: the kitchen kind. drinking out of a glass makes water and everything else taste better. taste the difference sometime. that's all i drink out of at home. say no to plastic.
eating establishments: kumagoro is a great sushi spot; i really like the humpy burger at humpy's; brewhouse when i'm feelin lively; mike's hotdog stand in downtown ankritz; any friggin restaurant after a long stay in the vill.
simple things: hanging with the boys, cutting up game, laughing at a funny story, and more importantly, making funny stories.

pack it up, pack it in....
(let me begin) here are some necessities for the field and home for effective meat processing. utilizing the following items will ensure a great butchering experience.
sharp stainless steel blade: stainless, so it won't rust. clean meat is a must. there are generally two types that are needed. a skinning blade and a cutting blade. a good knife will take care of both.
sharpener: diamond sharpening stones are the best. stones are good, wands or sticks are even better. gotta keep that blade sharp--a dull knife is a dangerous knife.
bone saw: 12 points per inch. something not too big. but remember, 12 points per inch.
towel: its good to dry your hands, especially if you wash the blood off in the snow. wet hands are cold hands.
plastic bags: gotta put away the goods: heart and lungs make for great cooking. i've learned recently to cut open the fresh heart. don't ask me why.
thermos full of tea or coffee: hot liquids are important, especially if its cold outside.
put these together and you will keep clear of the house of pain. happy cutting.

33 miles
i was doing a google search on the demographics of otz and found some good stuff. inga for real-type info. AND, found that otz is 33 miles above the arctic circle, not 13 as i previously stated. i guess i have to get my own info sometimes. anyways:
Kotzebue is located at 66°53′50″N, 162°35′8″W (66.897192, -162.585444)GR1.
Kotzebue lies on a gravel spit at the end of the Baldwin Peninsula in the Kotzebue Sound. It is 53 km (33 miles) north of the arctic circle on Alaska's western coast.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 74.2 km² (28.7 mi²). 69.9 km² (27.0 mi²) of it is land and 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²) of it (5.76%) is water.
more info:

yupik word of the day--nenglirrpaa
nenglirrpaa (neng-LLIGG'-baa): how cold it is!
Nenglirrpaa! Does the wind here ever stop blowing?
NOTES:
'nenglirrpaa' is a term that's used to convey utter coldness from an environmental/weather standpoint. the word is usually used all by itself.
when you walk into a room, and say 'nenglirrpaa,' make sure you....
(guys): bring your hands together and warm them.
(gals): pull your shoulders up and shake them a little. nenglirrpaa.

rest in peace
this morning i read adn.com and learned of the passing of a prominent athabascan leader in fairbanks. shirley demientieff was "a fierce protector of children, Alaska Native land and elders."
as i read about her accomplishments and what she stood up for, i felt chills roll down my spine. its inspiring to read about someone as selfless as ms. demientieff, who fights for her people and leads others in the process.
reading the article reminded me of my cousin tun'aq. she was a fierce protector and activist herself. tun'aq took me in as one of her own when my mom passed. she is missed. powerful, good-natured, influential leaders like ms. demientieff and tun'aq are a great inspiration to do good in this world.
this reminds of a saying that i keep in mind. do things right. do the right things. there's a difference, and these women kept a good balance of both.

interesting morning news
lately i've been turning on the radio in the morning as i eat my honeynut cheerios. kotz radio 720 am. i've heard some interesting stuff. the other day there was some dj on the radio, and i seriously thought he was a goober. made me shake my head, that guy. anyways, he was talking about almost getting arrested on new year's eve, but the cop was kind to him, or some shit like that. he was also talking about some nonsense stuff, in a weird kind of way. i mean, he wasn't exactly using discretion in the way he was delivering the message. he was too loose in his delivery, if that makes any sense.
on a lighter note, i learned that today is the day the sun is closest to the earth all year. its 3,000,000 miles closer today, or something like that. that sounds like a lot of mileage for something, but 3 mil was the number. i also learned that the earth moves around on a 23 or 23.5 degree axis, or something to that effect. that's why you get summer on one side of the earth and winter on the other. i like that program. there was also some funny, pro-native tunes playing. it was like a native weird al yankovic doing his thing. funny morning tunes.
let's just hope that nut job doesn't talk weird again on the air. alot of people listen to the radio in the morning.

new year's eve and bone soup
dean and i went out to sisaulik for caribou on the 31st. it was great to be out shooting 'bou and cutting it up on new year's eve. i think its a great start on the new year. other than losing a tarp and getting frostbit, it was good. i lost a tarp on the way to sisaulik--wasn't properly secured on the sno-go. also got frostbit up, so now my face is peeling away in some spots. i look like a true blue village hunter man now. haha!
mama jama and i were cutting up some 'bou the other day and we had a difference about what to call the zip-loc'ed 'bou. i cut up some leg bones into pieces for soup, so i wanted to call it 'bone soup.' she wanted to call it something else and made a big deal about it too. leg stew, stew meat, scrap soup, i forget. anyways, bone soup--its easy, descriptive, and there's no argument about what it is. haha! i think its kind of a funny, but good description. bone soup. bone soup. can't wait to cook up some bone soup. mmmmmm....boooone sooooup.

golf, my latest addiction
lately i've been an addict. my new affliction comes in the form of video game play. tiger woods pga tour 2007. the game rocks, man! i'd say its numba one on my list, above 'halo.'
the coolest thing about it is the ability to strengthen your customized player's skills, as well as buying new shit (clubs, shoes, gear, i've even got diamond teeth!). as you progress in the game, and your skills increase, you get to play against different golfers in the 'team tour' mode. right now i'm golfing against john daly. tiger woods in the last bugger on the tour. i've spent thousands of dollars on new clubs, drivers, putters, etc, but i think its time to upgrade my bag. better clubs means farther hits.
tiger woods 2007 is a must have game on the ps2.
