rest in peace

this morning i read adn.com and learned of the passing of a prominent athabascan leader in fairbanks. shirley demientieff was "a fierce protector of children, Alaska Native land and elders."

as i read about her accomplishments and what she stood up for, i felt chills roll down my spine. its inspiring to read about someone as selfless as ms. demientieff, who fights for her people and leads others in the process.

reading the article reminded me of my cousin tun'aq. she was a fierce protector and activist herself. tun'aq took me in as one of her own when my mom passed. she is missed. powerful, good-natured, influential leaders like ms. demientieff and tun'aq are a great inspiration to do good in this world.

this reminds of a saying that i keep in mind. do things right. do the right things. there's a difference, and these women kept a good balance of both.
